One Earth’s Project Marketplace funds on-the-ground climate solutions that are key to solving the climate crisis through three pillars of collective action — renewable energy, nature conservation, and regenerative agriculture.

A transition to renewable energy is especially needed in markets like Indonesia, a country which is undergoing rapid electrification driven largely by coal power. There is a critical education gap in the region about the many benefits of renewable energy and the economic opportunities for entrepreneurs in the region.

Building on existing programs, New Energy Nexus Indonesia aims to scale clean energy bootcamps to inspire more adoption and enthusiasm for clean energy solutions. This project will enable the local team to work with clean energy entrepreneurs and startups to develop their businesses, build capacity, and receive a structured business development program.

To date, New Energy Nexus has supported over 200 startups in 17 countries, creating approximately 3,000 jobs and placing $7 million in venture capital.

To support work in Indonesia, New Energy Nexus will conduct hackathons with specific problem statements focusing on smart energy challenges and opportunities. These will be targeted at energy enthusiasts, students, and professionals, inviting individuals to compete in the development of an innovative idea or prototype.

To attract potential participants, workshops will be designed to provide an opportunity to learn about renewable energy for those who are new to the sector, as well as for more experienced participants to get the technical support they need.

The events will Increase stakeholders’ knowledge about various renewable energy startup business models that are relevant to accelerating Indonesia’s transition to renewable energy, and the potential impact of renewable energy startups for Indonesia in terms of job creation, economic development, innovation ecosystem, environmental sustainability and social equity.

These hackathons are expected to serve as an effective outreach tool to strengthen the local startup ecosystem and community. Successful teams will be given the opportunity to participate in subsequent bootcamps to further refine their idea or prototype and develop business model. These will be designed by New Energy Nexus to help new and existing startups improve their business models and the viability of their products through a hands-on, interactive learning environment.
